Inspectors

About

Inspectors visit organic farms and facilities to verify compliance with the organic regulations. After the in-person inspection, the inspector writes a detailed report describing their observations and any concerns. As independent contractors, inspectors determine their own workload and schedules. Some inspect as a full-time career, but many inspect part-time to supplement other income.

To become an inspector, the National Organic Program requires applicants to have 2,000 hours of relevant work or life experience. In addition, prospective inspectors must complete 50 hours of training, which is most often provided by the International Organic Inspectors Association (IOIA). See IOIA’s website for training locations, dates, and cost.

After training is complete, OEFFA will help arrange a mentorship and the continuing education that will lead to contract inspection work.

Application Process

Qualified current inspectors may reach out any time to inspections@oeffa.org to inquire about available inspections.

If you are interested in inspecting for OEFFA, please submit a cover letter, resume, appropriate IOIA certificates, and a list of three references to inspections@oeffa.org.

Multiple factors are taken into account in hiring inspectors—demand for specific scopes, experience, training, education, communication skills, location, and willingness to travel. As of April 2025, we are particularly in need of inspectors for the following locations and scopes:

  • Pennsylvania Livestock (dairy)
  • Missouri Livestock (poultry)
  • Missouri Crops
  • New York Handlers

Please contact the Inspection Coordinator if you have any further questions about inspecting for OEFFA.
